i will NEVER buy another gun from a retail store
 

so, i bought a beretta handgun last saturday. waited about an hour while they sat on hold to do the federal background check. got charged $8 for the background check. whatever.

in wisconsin, we have a 3 day waiting period. so, i go back yesterday to pick up the gun.

"you waited longer than 96 hours to pick up the gun, so we have to do the background check again."

WHAT?

i call the manager over.

me: what's the deal? i've bought tons of hand guns over the years, you have 30 days after the background check to pick them up before a re-check.

manager: they changed it. now it's 96 hours.

me: so, i have to wait 72 hours to pick it up, but i have to get in in under 96 hours to pick it up. so i have a 24 hour window to get my gun?

manager: that is my understanding. to tell you the truth, we don't know. the local police told us one thing, our corporate reps tell us something different, we get conflicting reports, so we are going with the 96 hour rule now.

me: (angry, but what am i going to do, i already paid for it). okay, do it then (pissed at this point).

IT TAKES 1 HOUR AND 40 MINUTES TO GET THROUGH TO THE FEDERAL BACKGROUND CHECK LINE.

and, i get charged another $8.

so, i spent almost 3 hours total milling around to get checked, spent $16 in check fees, and had a 24 hour window to get my gun.

I WILL BUY 100% OF MY GUNS FROM PRIVATE PARTIES FROM NOW ON.

Soon it will be like some cell phone rebates. You have to wait 6 months to mail in the rebate, but it must be received within 3 months of the date of purchase.

Three years ago? it's been more than a decade since I bought a gun from a retail store.

and, by the way, I have sold some of them and I lost all the rest of them in that unfortunate boating accident

Guy, this smells fishy to me....I know WI stinks in terms of gun laws but I have never heard anything so ridiculous....it sounds like the store in question has found a clever way to interpret the law to their own advantage...$16 margin on every gun purchase could add up nicely.....I'm in MA and, as bad as it is here, it is nothing like what you described...I was in and out in about 45 minutes, no 3-day wait, no $8 background check fee, nothing.....the paperwork was a hassle, but other than that it was easy....the only thing I didn't like was that the guy at the counter would not sell me ammo with the gun, he said I had to leave the store (they actually escort you out the front door with your piece to make sure you go straight out), and then come back and buy the ammo afterwards.....which is asinine.

Personally, I would have raised the roof right there if they tried to double charge me, and I would have kicked up so much dirt, they would have waived the entire fee, guaranteed....you've got to make it painful for them to do this stuff..

I'd hate to see what you're average GIMer gets quoted for Boat insurance.

Surely the store should waive that second 8$ fee. What was the name of the store so we can all laugh at them the next time we feel like patronizing them?

i have NEVER had anything like this hapen before. personally, i think the store in question is just way mismanaged. however, it's pissed me off enough to never go the retail route again.

i got the feeling the gun manager was just as confused as i was with callin times, pick up times, etc.

ASININE.

edit: just did some google work, apparently i only had to wait 48 hours, not 3 days as i was told, and i can't find ANY reference to "if you wait past 96 hours you have to go throught the check again." at this point, i am assuming the store in question is just making up firearms procedures to make more money ($8 check fees).

Private Transfers are always preferred in my book. :yes:

Second would be a local gun show - then Third would be mail order to my favorite gun shop.

Last would be a retailer.

In wisconsin there is a 48 hr wait for handguns. That is a state law. There is a state charge of $8 for that. It does not apply to long guns. If you pick it up after 72 hours has past there is a recheck. That is state only I believe...they just call in and they say ok. There is no additional $8 charge for that.

Maybe you should not buy from that particular retail store again!

By the way Doyle wants to raise that charge to $30 to pay for his plan to role back the welfare laws to before the jobs program= more votes for him.

I would go back and demand my $8 back.
